Portugal Golden Visa

Europe's most flexible residency-by-investment program — a EUR 500,000 subscription into a regulated Portuguese fund, only 7 days per year in-country, and EU permanent residency at five years.

Why the fund route

Real estate was removed from the Golden Visa in October 2023. The live route today is a subscription of at least EUR 500,000 into a CMVM-regulated venture capital or private equity fund with at least 60% of its capital deployed in Portuguese companies. Alternatives remain for EUR 500,000 in research activities, EUR 250,000 in arts and heritage, and job creation of ten or more roles.

Program at a glance

Investment

From EUR 500,000

Regulated Portuguese fund subscription, typically with a 6-10 year horizon. Government and legal fees are additional.

Presence

7 days per year

An average of just 7 days annually (14 days per two-year renewal period) keeps the residence permit valid.

Travel

Schengen mobility

Visa-free travel across the Schengen Area, and a Portuguese passport ranks among the world's strongest for visa-free access.

Family

Whole family included

Spouse, dependent children, and dependent parents can be added to the same application.

Citizenship

Residency at 5, citizenship later

Permanent residency is secured at 5 years. Under 2026 nationality-law reform, naturalisation itself now requires 7 years' residency (EU/CPLP nationals) or 10 years (other nationalities), plus an A2 Portuguese language test and a clean record.

Timeline

Approval in ~12-24 months

Processing times remain the program's main variable; residency rights accrue from the date of application.
